Weavers Barn ConversionLocation: Toomebridge. Design Style: Contemporary open plan living Client BriefRooms:3 Bedrooms (master with en-suite & dressing) Large kitchen with large utility room, wc off. Living/Snug area with Stove and range cooker—feature chimney Lounge situated in upstairs with vaulted ceiling Study area Design intent In implementing the client brief, we have endeavoured to satisfy all the requirements as to room needs along with a open plan feel where possible to maintain as much natural light. This has been achieved with use of maximum glazing to the rear and vaulted ceilings upstairs. This is apparent as the main entrance hall is entered, with a double height space in the stairwell; boasting a large feature window to the rear and roof window to the front, providing natural light to the landing. The entrance hall acts as the link between the old and new blocks. The old block provides the all-day living spaces, and the new block provide the sleeping quarters. All spaces have been designed to provide a comfortable, yet practical space, with no wasted areas of grandeur. Never-the-less, this compact layout gives the impression of bright, open spaces throughout. All sleeping quarters have natural light with the upstairs bedrooms have additional diffused light from the roof windows. The existing building had an external staircase providing access to the top floor; we decided to retain this idea and provide an outside patio space, accessed from the first floor lounge, and external staircase from the ground. Due the rural-forestry setting of the building, this area provides a tranquil, luxurious yet private space for relaxation. Overall the new blocks either side have been designed to be sympathetic and integrate effortlessly with the existing building. With the use of similar materials and attention to detail in specific areas achieves this extremely well and allows us to reduce the budget in other areas without compromising quality and the overall design. |
