Location:       Cushendall, Northern Ireland.

Design Style: Traditional / Period

Client Brief

The ground floor was to have a large  family country style kitchen as the main feature with the living areas leading off, with the provision made for a large, well lit lounge at the other end of the ground floor. a Separate utility space was to be provided as a wash area and storage.

On the first floor plan, provision was to be made for as many bedrooms as possible, as the house is to be used primarily for the extended family to meet and spend time at weekends and holidays.

Overall, the home should feel modern, bright and spacious, but also retain the traditional feel of the existing materials and features.

Design intent

In implementing the client brief, we have endeavoured to satisfy all the requirements as to room needs to a modern contemporary standard internally whilst retaining all the external original features. On the exterior facades, the main objective is to bring the original materials and finishes of this building back to life and so preserve a piece of history of the area. This entails the removal of any remaining render on the stone work with new re-pointing with lime, removing the roof slates for replacement onto a new roof structure, making good the chimneys and any associated waterproofing works and replacing all the windows and doors.

The only significant change to the exterior is the replacement of the wooden double doors on the rear elevation with a new glazed screen.

As on of the main criteria for this renovation is low maintenance we have looked at various materials and systems to achieve this but also striving to retain the integrity of the building by using sympathetic/traditional materials.

The fitting out of the interior is to a modern style with clean and generally hard surfaces was to enable easy maintenance and a dust free environment. Where possible original features are to retained such as stone floor tiles.
